A young Platt, despite being freshly crowned PFA Player of the Year, went to Italia '90 as a back-up to skipper Bryan Robson. He was thrown on in extra time in the second round against Belgium and, in the final play before penalties, he latched onto a floated free-kick to swivel and exquisitely volley home the latest ever goal in a World Cup match, thus ensuring England's progress to the next round as well as his place in history (wearing 17).
He went on to score the opener in England's 3-2 quarter-final victory against Cameroon. In the semi-final against eventual winners Germany he had an extra-time winner disallowed and in the ensuing shootout, Pla17 was one of the three England penalty-takers who scored. He was an excellent ambassador for the number 17 at Italia '90.
Commitment to 17: Dubious. He wore 7 once Robson retired.
