Likelihood of starting the tournament: Not likely, he's expected to start on the bench. However he played in a number of qualifiers and has had a fantastic season with the team that he captains, Sampdoria, who he guided to fourth in Serie A and a Champions League spot. I'd expect to see at least some of him in South Africa.
Commitment to shirt: Total commitment. Wears the number 17 shirt with pride for Sampdoria and Italy and whilst he was cautious wearing the shirt to begin with he has grown into it and can count on him as a true pureblood 17 at this World Cup. His name in Italy and especially in Genoa is synonymous with the number 17.
